Today
you begin your exploration of this UNESCO World Heritage Site fittingly
called one of the last Shangri-Las of Southeast Asia with a visit to
Vat Xieng Thong, the most important Buddhist monastery in the country.
The main sanctuary represents the classic Luang Prabang temple
architecture with roofs that sweep low to the ground. In the compound
stand several small chapels housing bronze Buddha Images, which were
displayed in Paris in 1911. Near the East gate stands the royal funeral
chapel. Inside you'll see the impressive 40-foot high Royal funeral
float and various funeral urns of several members of the former royal
family. The gilt panel on the exterior of the chapel depicts a
semi-erotic episode from the Hindu Ramayana. From there you take a
walking tour visiting some of the most impressive temples in town
including Vat Visoun, the site of an impressive stupa and That Makmo,
stylistically more Sri Lankalese than Lao. Continue to the nearby Vat
Aham, one of the city's major tutelary shrines dedicated to Devote
Luang (spirit) Pu Gneu Ya Gneu (ancestors). Continue to Vat Mai, built
in 1796 and famous for the five-tiered roof of its wooden sim. Continue
your sightseeing with a visit to the former Royal Palace, now a
National Museum, where there are ornate gilded and brocaded reception
rooms, Buddha's and other spectacular artifacts including the Prabang
(a large holy image) which was given in the 14th century to King Fa
Ngum by the Khmers. In the afternoon, walk by the Vats of Chum Khong,
Xieng Muan and Pa Phai, then follow the Mekong River to the silversmith
whose family worked for the Royal family. He has a small selection of
good quality silver dishes, plates and jewelry. The Vat at Xieng Muan
is important because here the monks learn the temple arts of gilding,
roof-making etc. In the intervening years however the older monks were
unable to pass down their skills to the younger novices. Thanks to
UNESCO and Norway, funds were created to inaugurate a program to
rectify this. Sunset at Vat Phrabat Tai located along the Mekong River.
